How to Install a Helmet Visor

A visor on a football helmet is a great way to avoid eye injuries and shade your head from the sun. If you play on a high school team and opt for a shaded visor, check the rules for your state to make sure it is legal, as some states only allow clear visors. Also, before you buy a new visor, make sure it is compatible with the helmet you own. Once you've completed these preliminary steps, follow the simple process described in this article to learn how to install a helmet visor.

  1. First: Take off the existing face mask

Take the old face mask off the helmet using a screwdriver. Loosen the screws by turning them to the left, then take them out and set them aside.

  2. Second: Slip on the new visor

Slip the new visor onto the primary eye section of the helmet. There are tabs on the upper right and left front of the visor. Make sure these are on the inner part of the face mask when you slide it on to the helmet.

  3. Third: Put on the new screw clips

Attach the two screw clips included with the new visor onto the sideways bars of the face mask. Align both of the clips with the matching marks on either side of the lower part of the visor. Put the two screws in the clips, then tighten them by turning them to the right to fasten the visor to the face mask.

  4. Fourth: The final connections

With the new visor in position, reconnect the face mask to the helmet by tightening all the screws and turning them to the right. To avoid confusion, remember this expression: turn to the right to make it tight.
