How to Fill a Helmet Bladder with Air

The University of Michigan Hospital's Dr. Richard Schneider is attributed to discovering that air can be used to lessen the impact of blunt force, although it is unknown who initially invented football helmet bladders. Using this discovery, an inflatable bladder was designed by Dr. Schneider for the football helmet's interior. Since the helmet is probably the most important part of a football player's uniform and equipment, it is smart to learn how to fill a helmet bladder with air.

  1. First: The helmet fitting

Calipers and the inflation bulb are both used in the helmet fitting. First, the calipers are used to measure the player's head. The size and style of the helmet shell is chosen using those measurements. Next, padding is placed inside the helmet to ensure that it fits properly on the player's head.

  2. Second: Inflating the bladders

Inflatable pads as well as foam-rubber pads are included in the padding. The top and side padding both consist of air bladders that help with fitting. After positioning the helmet on the player's head, the inflation bulb is added to two areas on the outer part of the helmet. To ensure safety, the helmet must fit perfectly on the player's head. The inflation bulb is placed in the openings on top of the helmet and inflates the air bladders in various areas.
